Rock wall climbing gear?

Ive just started climbing rock wall and would like to get my own gear. Im just wondering what the best gear is.

What kind of shoe is best? What kind of harness? Chalk ect…

any pointers would be great also

The first pointer I would give would be to take a climbing class – you will meet other climbers and learn about the differences in gear and how to use it.

Most gear is very similar but people prefer a specific brand for minor differences. The basic gear that you would need for all types of rock climbing (gym, top rope, lead, trad) would be:

Harness – Check out Petzl, Black Diamond, Metolius, and Singing Rock (best price if on a budget)

Shoes – I like La Sportiva because they fit me the best, but you will have to try on different brands to see what works for you.

Locking Carabineer / Belay device – Black Diamond ‘biner and Black Diamond ATC XP (this one is the easiest and best)

Helmet – if climbing outdoors, get a helmet – Petzl is best
