Hunting Knife

What would your dream knife for hunting be?

I don’t mean necessarily the manufacture of the knife but rather what shape, length blade, what type of steel and what kind/shape of handle?

So lets say you could custom order your dream knife for hunting. What would it be like? And what kind of scabbard or sheath?

Since different chores call for different knives, there ain’t no such think as the perfect hunters knife.

A feller will need at least three or four knives: A general Purpose knife, a skinning knife, a caping knife, and probably one for butchering the quarry.

In this question, I’ll stick with the general purpose knife.

IMO you can make a big knife do the job of a little knife, but you can play hell trying to do make a little knife do a big knife’s job. So I’m a firm believer in using a big knife for a General Purpose knife.

There are plenty of great knife designs from all over the world. But IMO, the very best of the large general purpose breed is the Bowie Knife. There are plenty of different variations on the Bowie theme, but I prefer the ones with good wide blades not less than 12 inches long, and longer preferred, with a sharp recurved point and a heavy spine with a fuller on both sides of the blade. I like a good wide cross guard and a wood, bone or antler grip.

With a good Bowie Knife, you can clear a camp site, cut firewood, dig a latrine, cut anything that needs cutting and use it as a last ditch defense against critters large and toothy.
